Practice: Time Prepositions

Voorzetsels van tijd

Dutch uses different prepositions for different parts of time. The most important rule: om for clock times, op for days, in for months and seasons. These do not always match English.

Key rules for Time Prepositions

om โ€” clock times

Use om when talking about a specific time on the clock. In English this is "at", but in Dutch it is always om.

op โ€” days and dates

Use op for days of the week and specific calendar dates. This matches English "on" but is easy to confuse with in.

in โ€” months, seasons and years

Use in for months, seasons, and years. This is the same as English "in", but watch out: Dutch uses op for days, not in.
