Dutch Grammar Quiz: Location Prepositions (Voorzetsels van plaats)

Dutch location prepositions describe where something is. The tricky part: Dutch uses different prepositions than English in many situations — "at the table" is aan tafel, "at the station" is op het station, and "in the street" is op straat.

Key rules for Location Prepositions

in — inside an enclosed space

Use in when something is physically inside something else, or for countries and cities.

op — on a surface or at a location

Use op when something is on top of a surface, or at open locations like streets, schools, and stations. Note: "in the street" is op straat in Dutch.

aan — attached to or at an edge

Use aan when something is attached to a surface, or positioned at the edge of something (a table, river, coast). Also used for writing and speaking to someone.

Examples

De kat zit in de doos. — The cat is in the box.
Hij woont in Nederland. — He lives in the Netherlands.
De sleutels liggen in de tas. — The keys are in the bag.
Het boek ligt op de tafel. — The book is on the table.
Ze wacht op het station. — She waits at the station.
De auto staat op straat. — The car is in the street.
