Practice: Direction Prepositions

Voorzetsels van richting

Direction prepositions tell you where someone is going or which route they take. Unlike location prepositions (in, op, aan), these pair with movement verbs like gaan, rijden, lopen, and komen.

Key rules for Direction Prepositions

naar โ€” to / towards a destination

Naar is the most common direction preposition. Use it whenever you move to a place. It covers "to", "towards", and is used for cities, buildings, countries, and people.

door โ€” through

Door means moving through something โ€” a park, a tunnel, a city. The thing you pass through comes directly after door.

langs โ€” along / past

Langs means moving alongside something or past it without entering. Use it when you drive along a road, river, or coast, or when you pass a shop without going in.
