Tijdindicaties bij imperfectum
In Dutch, time expressions signal which past tense to use. Words like vroeger and toen point to the imperfectum, while words like net and al point to the perfectum. Recognising these markers lets you choose the right tense automatically.
<strong>Vroeger</strong> (formerly), <strong>toen</strong> (then/when), <strong>in + year</strong>, and frequency words like <strong>altijd / nooit / vaak / soms</strong> used in a past narrative all signal the imperfectum. They describe how things were or what used to happen.
Practice: Complete: "Vroeger ___ ze heel verlegen." (zijn)
was — vroeger signals imperfectum. zijn → imperfectum: was. Vroeger was ze heel verlegen.
Practice: Complete: "In 2010 ___ hij een baard." (hebben)
had — in + year signals imperfectum. hebben → had. In 2010 had hij een baard.
<strong>Net / zojuist</strong> (just now), <strong>al</strong> (already), <strong>nog niet</strong> (not yet), <strong>vandaag / deze week / dit jaar</strong>, and <strong>gisteren / vorige week</strong> signal the perfectum — they frame actions as recently completed or relevant to the present.
Practice: Complete: "Ze heeft hem ___ ontmoet." (just now)
net — net (just now) signals perfectum: Ze heeft hem net ontmoet.
Practice: Complete: "Ik heb haar ___ niet gebeld." (not yet)
nog niet — nog niet with the perfectum means the action has not happened yet but is expected: Ik heb haar nog niet gebeld.
<strong>Toen</strong> refers to a specific moment or period <em>in the past</em>. <strong>Dan</strong> means "then" in a present or future sequence, or in a conditional result. Never use dan to refer back to a past moment.
Practice: Choose: "Vroeger woonden we samen. ___ hadden we een hond." (then, past)
Toen — toen refers to a past moment. dan would be wrong here because we are describing the past.
Practice: Choose: "Als je haar belt, ___ is ze blij." (then, result of condition)
dan — dan appears in als … dan constructions for present/future conditions. toen would imply a past moment.
