Practice: Past Participle

Voltooid deelwoord

The past participle (voltooid deelwoord) is used to form the perfect tense, the passive voice, and as an adjective. Regular verbs follow a spelling rule; irregular verbs must be memorised โ€” and that is what this lesson focuses on.

Key rules for Past Participle

Formation โ€” regular vs irregular

Regular (weak) verbs: ge- + stem + -d or -t. Irregular (strong) verbs: ge- + changed stem + -en. A handful of verbs are unpredictable (brengen โ†’ gebracht, denken โ†’ gedacht) and must simply be learnt.

Auxiliary โ€” hebben or zijn

Most verbs use hebben. Verbs of motion to a destination or change of state use zijn. A useful check: did something move from A to B, or change from one state to another?

Word order โ€” participle goes to the end

In a Dutch main clause the auxiliary sits in position 2 and the past participle goes to the very end. Time and place expressions slot in between them.
