Key rules for Er — Place & Existence

er = there (location)

Er can replace a previously mentioned place, meaning "there". It sits in the same position as a normal adverb — right after the verb in a main clause.

er is / er zijn — expressing existence

Use er is (singular/uncountable) or er zijn (plural) to say that something exists, is available, or is present in a place.

er zijn + number — how many there are

When answering "how many?" about something just mentioned, combine er zijn with a number. The number follows immediately after er zijn.
