Er van plaats
Dutch er has several jobs. In this lesson we focus on two: er meaning "there" as a place word, and er is / er zijn to say that something exists or is present.
<strong>Er</strong> can replace a previously mentioned place, meaning "there". It sits in the same position as a normal adverb — right after the verb in a main clause.
Practice: Ik woon ___ al vijf jaar. (there)
er — Er replaces the location: Ik woon er al vijf jaar.
Practice: Ze zijn ___ niet. (they are not there)
er — Ze zijn er niet. Er functions as a place adverb after zijn.
Practice: Translate: "Have you ever been there?"
Ben je er ooit geweest? — Ben je er ooit geweest? — er follows the verb group.
Use <strong>er is</strong> (singular/uncountable) or <strong>er zijn</strong> (plural) to say that something exists, is available, or is present in a place.
Practice: ___ ___ een tuin achter het huis. (there is)
Er is — Er is een tuin achter het huis. Tuin is singular → er is.
Practice: ___ ___ vier kamers in het appartement. (there are)
Er zijn — Er zijn vier kamers in het appartement. Kamers is plural → er zijn.
Practice: ___ ___ ___ kelder. (there is no)
Er is geen — Er is geen kelder. Geen replaces een in negation.
Practice: Translate: "There are two bathrooms."
Er zijn twee badkamers. — Er zijn twee badkamers. Plural existence uses er zijn.
When answering "how many?" about something just mentioned, combine <strong>er zijn</strong> with a number. The number follows immediately after er zijn.
Practice: Hoeveel verdiepingen zijn er? — ___ ___ twee verdiepingen. (there are)
Er zijn — Er zijn twee verdiepingen. — er zijn introduces the count.
Practice: ___ ___ maar één raam in de slaapkamer. (there is only)
Er is — Er is maar één raam in de slaapkamer.

is — Er is een grote keuken in het huis. Singular noun → is.
