Key rules for Comparative & Superlative

Comparative: adjective + -er

Add -er to the base adjective to form the comparative. Spelling rules apply: double a final consonant after a short vowel (druk โ†’ drukker), and drop a silent -e before adding -er.

Superlative: adjective + -st / -ste

Add -st to the base adjective when used predicatively (after zijn). Add -ste when used attributively (directly before a noun).

Irregular forms โ€” must memorise

Some very common adjectives have irregular comparative and superlative forms that do not follow the -er / -st pattern.
