Comparatief en Superlatief
Use the comparative to say something is more/less than something else, and the superlative to say something is the most. In Dutch, comparatives add -er to the adjective and superlatives add -st.
Add <strong>-er</strong> to the base adjective to form the comparative. Spelling rules apply: double a final consonant after a short vowel (druk → drukker), and drop a silent -e before adding -er.
Practice: Fietsen is ___ (snel) dan lopen.
sneller — Snel ends in a single consonant after a long vowel, so just add -er: sneller.
Practice: Op zaterdag is het centrum ___ (druk) dan op zondag.
drukker — Druk has a short vowel before the final consonant, so double it: drukker.
Add <strong>-st</strong> to the base adjective when used predicatively (after zijn). Add <strong>-ste</strong> when used attributively (directly before a noun).
Practice: Zaterdag is de ___ (druk) dag van de week. (attributive)
drukste — Before a noun, the superlative takes -ste: de drukste dag.
Practice: Van alle sporten is zwemmen het ___. (makkelijk, predicative)
makkelijkst — After het (predicative superlative), add -st: het makkelijkst.
Some very common adjectives have <strong>irregular</strong> comparative and superlative forms that do not follow the -er / -st pattern.
Practice: Hij speelt ___ (goed, comparative) gitaar dan zijn broer.
beter — Goed is irregular: comparative is beter, not goeder.
Practice: Dit is het ___ (goed, superlative) boek dat ik ooit heb gelezen.
beste — Goed is irregular: superlative is best/beste. Attributive before a noun → beste.

Practice: Ik heb ___ (weinig, comparative) hobby's dan mijn zus.
minder — Weinig is irregular: comparative is minder.
Practice: Van alle muziekstijlen hou ik het ___ van jazz. (graag, superlative)
liefst — Graag → liefst in the predicative superlative: ik hou het liefst van.
Use <strong>dan</strong> after a comparative to introduce what is being compared. Use <strong>het + superlative</strong> in predicative sentences to say something ranks highest.
Practice: Yoga is rustiger ___ boksen.
dan — After a comparative adjective, use dan to introduce the second element of the comparison.
Practice: Van alle sporten is hockey het ___. (populair, predicative superlative)
populairst — Predicative superlative: het populairst.
