Flashwords ("we", "the app") helps you learn Dutch. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and the services we rely on. We keep it simple: we collect only what's needed to run the app and save your progress, and we don't sell your data or show ads.
Information we collect
- Account details — if you create an account, your email address and the first name you choose.
- Learning progress — your streak, daily goals, words seen and mastered, completed lessons and quizzes, and writing/listening/speaking practice scores.
- Usage & diagnostics — basic, aggregated analytics about how the app is used, to help us improve it.
- Practice content you submit — text you write for AI feedback, and (only during speaking practice) audio from your microphone, which is transcribed to text for evaluation.
You can use much of the app without an account; in that case your progress is stored only on your device.
How we use it
- To create your account and sign you in.
- To save and sync your progress across your devices.
- To show your first name and streak on the leaderboard (visible to other users). Your email is never shown.
- To evaluate your written and spoken Dutch and give you feedback.
- To understand usage trends and improve the app.
Services we use
We rely on trusted third parties that process data on our behalf:
- Google Firebase — authentication, database (progress sync), analytics, and configuration. See Google's privacy information.
- Groq — processes the text and speech transcripts you submit for AI writing and speaking practice, to generate feedback.
Microphone
The app requests microphone access only for the speaking-practice feature (Spreken), to transcribe and evaluate your spoken Dutch. Audio is not recorded or used for any other purpose.
Data retention & deletion
Your account data is kept while your account is active. You can sign out at any time. To delete your account and associated data, contact us at support@flashwords.nl and we'll remove it.
Children
Flashwords is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "last updated" date above.
